Blink 182 Donates Money to Burn Centers in Appreciation of Drummer's Burn Injury Treatment

Burn centers help treat some of the most horrific injuries out there. Severe burns require specialized care, and an ultra sterile environment to prevent the kind of infections that can set in.

Last year, burn injuries and the kind of disfigurement they can leave behind were all across the gossip media, when Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker suffered serious burn injuries in a plane crash. Barker and his friend DJ AM were in a Learjet on its way from South Carolina to Los Angeles. The plane failed to clear a runway, and exploded into flames. Barker and DJAM survived the accident with second and third degree burns. Barker received medical care at the Grossman Burn Center in California and the Joseph M Still Burn Center in Georgia.

As all burn injury victims do, Barker had a long and harrowing recovery period. The band is now expressing its thanks to the two burn centers with a special gift - they will donate the proceeds from their coming show in Phoenix to the two facilities.

Burn injuries are categorized into three - first, second and third degree burns. First degree burns are typically the least severe injuries, while third degree burns are the most severe.  First degree burns may result in swelling and redness. Second degree burns will result in a shiny appearance to the skin and damage to skin tissues. Third degree burns will involve a dry and leathery appearance to the skin, charred looking skin or skin that appears white or brown.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year 1.1 million Americans suffer burn injuries that are severe enough to require medical care. About 4,500 of these victims die.

Burn injuries can occur as a result of automobile accidents. They can also result from exposure to corrosive chemicals in industrial accidents, electrical fires and from defective products. Burn victims can experience severe trauma, and face the prospect of weeks in treatment facilities. There may be the need for cosmetic surgery to restore the appearance of the skin. For the families of such victims, watching their loved ones experience utter pain and anguish, can be equally traumatic.

Scott Grossman is a New Jersey burn injury lawyer, representing injured victims of burn injuries in Monmouth, Bergen, Passaic and OceanCounties and across the state of New Jersey.
